About Hannah Brown

My name is Hannah Mae Brown, I am 18 years old (Born January 27,2098). I currently attend Bonita High School as a senior. Since I am ahead in credits, I qualify to get out everyday at 11:39 AM which allows me to work directly after school. I have been a supervisor and chef at 21 Choices Frozen Yogurt in the Claremont village for about a year now. School and work mostly consume my life but Saturday and Sunday are my days of freedom. As I live in Laguna Beach on weekends, I enjoy spending my free time exploring funky art galleries and hiking through the coastal mountains if I am not at the beach swimming or surfing. As I live for sunrises and sunsets, every weekend I dedicate my evenings to watching the sunset while sketching whatever comes to mind. After It gets dark, I head to Aliso Viejo to catch the 9PM hot yoga class to close out my weekend. Centering my attention to appreciating the week that has past and opening up for the new one to come. Then Monday morning rolls back around and the cycle continues.

My Pace

I’ve always had an interest in art and immediately knew i wanted to use creativity within my project. After deep thought and consideration, I found a food stylist that would take me under her wing as an intern and assistant to commercial projects with food styling. I have previously been interested in taking photos of food for my own personal social media use, but it especially sparked my interest knowing the food i styled would be in magazines as well as commercials. For my project hours, I styled and garnished food using some natural as well as inorganic materials to create the perfect, mouth-watering piece at massive production centers shooting T.V. shows, commercials or professional photographs for magazines. After continuously creating these appealing presentations, it created this question within me, “Why do we desire things that look appealing, even when we know it's covered in non-consumable products?” The psychology behind it, is what i thought I dive into for my paper.

Project

During my internship, I prepped and styled food for shoots! I learned great time managing skills, along with how to work closely with surrounding film crew to create the perfect piece. My preparations are done the day before the shoot, where my mentor, Acirema and I go purchase all the necessarily groceries along with glassware, plates and any other props that we would use throughout the shoot. Acirema charges all expenses on credit, of which all would be reimbursed by the company that hired her. That day, we pick and choose which materials would look best in the shoot for that given company. Ensuring perfection of the products we’re using, i.e. fresh fruits and vegetables. The day of the shoots, we arrived extra early to set up and organize. After communication between the directors of what vision they have for the product, we began to set up. Using materials such as glycerin to create droplets of water on fruits creating the illusion that the fruit or vegetable is freshly cut along with other tricks to ensure the perfect image. It’s been a pleasure working with Acirema, since her experience from a lifetime of professional food styling has many benefits to those around her.

Paper

For my paper, I wrote an exploratory paper, researching the psychology behind the desire or lack of towards food. Getting into the details of color attraction and presentation. Subconsciously we are drawn to items that suit our wants and it creates this desire, regardless of what the item realistically consists of. Food is so significant in our culture and society that theres such an importance that is placed upon it.
