A spoiler is when the audience knows something major about the plot or a character, but the other characters do not know the information. This creates a bond with the audience, getting them hooked. It also creates a large amount of tension. When we know something that the characters don't, we can anticipate the bad things that are about to happen, even when nothing bad ends up happening. Spoilers keep us on the edge of our seats throughout the entire movie of story.

The Wife's Story

The Wife's Story starts off with the wife telling the audience great facts about her husband, but she is saying them in a questioning, almost negative way. This gives the readers a sense that something is wrong with the husband right off of the bat. This keeps us guessing as to what the bad thing about the husband is. She then starts to talk him up, telling us about how gentle he is and his great qualities. This is told as if she does not want to believe what has happened. When we find out that the husband mysteriously goes off at when there is a moon out, this gives the audience a bad feeling the the pits of their stomachs. The news is finally dropped that the husband is actually a werewolf; during the full moon, he turns into a human. That is when the audience can finally stop wondering and start reacting to the information that was hinted at throughout the entire story.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

In Jekyll and Hyde, we are shown the mysterious occurrences and behavior of Hyde in the beginning of the story. This leads the audience to suspect that this Hyde character has something more elaborate and evil going on in the background. Further along into the story, more information on Hyde is given to the audience, such as his connections to Jekyll. These spoilers add a sense of mystery and suspense to the story as we the audience can start to draw connections to things on our own. Even though there is not a great deal of information leaked to the audience about Hyde straight off the bat, the small sprinkled in spoilers are what helps keep the audience engaged and constantly guessing as of what comes next.

The Tell-Tale Heart

The Tell-Tale Heart, written my Edgar Allen Poe in 1843, is a prime example of a spoiler in literature. The plot of the story is that the main character is a psychopath. He kills a person because of the fact that he has a weird eye. Once he kills the man, he hides the body in his house underneath the floorboards. He is very confident that the body will never be found no matter how hard anybody looks for it. That is the example of a spoiler. We know that he kills the man, but none of the characters know that. When the police come to interrogate the main character, we know that the body is under the floorboards, but the police do not know that. The spoiler element keeps us guessing as to if the police will ever find the body or if the murderer will just get away with his crime. Since the main character keeps thinking about the body throughout the interrogation, the audience thinks that he will burst at any moment. This keeps us on the edge of our seats until finally, in the end, murdered confesses to his crime.

Dante's Inferno

Dante's Inferno is a well-known, horror book that divulges the audience into the depths of hell. The main character has somehow ended up in hell even though his true righteous path is in heaven. To assist him on his journey, a guide comes to show him the way through the many different layers of hell. In the beginning the reader learns that he must get to heaven through many different layers of different sufferings, knowing this spoiler allows the reader to kind of grasp the concept of going deeper and deeper into hell. This also opens up the reader's imagination of what is to come next on the next level. Although it is not a scary book, it is definitely very detailed on each pain and suffering each lost soul must do for an eternity that gives the reader chills.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

In this horror story, we know right from the beginning that something terrible is going to happen. The Earth is in World War 3, and all of the countries have developed super computers to fight each other. This gives the audience a bad feeling right from the start. Once the war goes on, one of the super computers takes over the human race and enslaves them. This keeps us on the edge of our seats. At this point, we know that the computers have evil plans for the humans. Once there are 5 humans left, one of them kills the other four because he thinks that will be a sufficient peace offering from him to the super computers. Finally, the computers make it so he can't hurt himself and torture him for the rest of his life.
